Doris Whitley Sloan

Winston-SalemDoris Whitley Sloan, age 90, passed away suddenly on Friday, November 8, 2013 at the home she shared with her daughter and son-in-law in Matthews, NC. She was active preparing her own meals and doing household chores to the end. She was born in Forsyth County on January 22, 1923 to the late L.E. Whitley, Sr. and Gladys Duncan Whitley. Doris was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School. She was a lifelong member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church and cherished the memories of friends in the Bona Vita Sunday School Class and Circle #2. Preceding her in death was her devoted husband of 60 years, Ray Buhl ""Bill"" Sloan; brother, PFC L.E. Whitley, Jr. Doris and Bill enjoyed sharing good times with family, friends, and neighbors. They were always ready to lend a helping hand to all. Doris is survived by a daughter, Vivian (Odell) Shields; grandson, Chris (Monica); grandson, Josh (Holly) and their sons, Whitman, Boone, and Roscoe; sister, Carrie Sue Whitley Satterfield; sisters-in-law, Cana Swicegood and Doris J. Sloan and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with Rev. John G. Rights officiating. Burial will follow at the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:00 at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the Sloan Family.
