Dorothy Stone Harmon

Mrs. Dorothy Stone Harmon, 91, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, at her residence in Winston-Salem, NC.

Dorothy was born on June 1, 1934, in Greer, SC, to Myrtle Othello McElrath Stone and Carl Dixon Stone.

Dorothy graduated from Parker High School in Greenville, SC, and earned a scholarship to attend Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC. Due to health concerns with her family, she had to leave Winthrop College to return home and care for her family. A few years later, she was able to complete her BA degree in English education from Furman University in Greenville, SC. She taught English and drama for 36 years. At the age of 40, she went to UNCG at night while teaching during the day and completed her Master's in Education degree. She taught English and drama and then retired from teaching after a tenure at West Forsyth High School in Winston-Salem.

When she was home for the Christmas holidays during her first year of college, she met the new Minister of Music from her church, Rev. James Wilson Harmon. Dorothy remained very involved with her church’s music program for the next few years. Finally, she was invited to a Christmas party by Rev. Harmon, and they married on August 19, 1955. They remained happily married for 64 years until his death in 2019.

Her love of the Lord and Father was the focal point of her life with Wilson. She, at different times, was a church choir director, Sunday school teacher, church organist, and deacon. Her faith was as strong as anyone could have. Her love of family, church, and the students she taught were the core motivations in her life.

Dorothy also worked for the Baptist Sunday School Board, writing devotional material. She also worked as a columnist for the Winston-Salem Sentinel, covering the west side of Forsyth County. She was also an accomplished writer, publishing 6 works.

Her published works include: Bystanders - (Amazon and in the Library of Congress), a book about how secondhand information about Jesus could have influenced lives of those who never met him; The Good Book of Prayer (Amazon and in the Library of Congress), about biblical guidelines for an effective prayer life; Archibald Rutledge: The man and his books, a biography of the Poet Laureate of South Carolina; Miracle on Main Street - a history of Main Street Baptist Church in Kernersville, NC; Prayer Is…, a study in Spiritual Communication; and "Crossbearer,"  a one act play. At the time of her passing, she was putting the final touches on another book, The ABC’s of Prayer.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Rev. James Wilson Harmon.

She is survived by her children, Craig Harmon (Sonta), James Harmon Jr. (Erica), and Katrina Logeman (Doug); and grandchildren, Brandon Cameron, Nathaniel (Kristen), Amelia (Zack), Wesley Harmon, Baylee (Will), Parris (Andrew), and 6 great grandchildren that called her GG. Her house was filled with God, love of family, and lots and lots of pictures.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on February 6, 2026, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC, officiated by Rev. Nathan Parrish. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A short burial will immediately follow the service at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, 6135 Ridgecrest Point, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

The family would like to thank all of the healthcare providers who worked so tirelessly to ensure that Dorothy remained in her home with comfort and love. Also, thanks to Rev. Nathan Parrish from Peacehaven Baptist Church and the church family for their support.
