Dorothy Sargent Sim

Dorothy Virginia Ring Sargent Sim, 89, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Brookdale Senior Living in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Dorothy was born in Dante, VA to Robert Walter and Reda Nash Ring. Dorothy had retired from National Geographic Society in 1988 and enjoyed winter residency, with her late husband John, in Cape Coral, FL from 1989-2011. She lived the rest of the year in Hyattsville and College Park, MD, as well as Winston-Salem, NC from 2004-2014. At the time of her passing she was living at Brookdale Senior Living in Fredericksburg, VA. She relocated there to be closer to her son and immediate family in 2014. Dorothy was actively involved in churches in Maryland, Florida, and most recently Heritage Hills Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Dorothy was known for her crafts and gifts of beautifully crocheted afghans. She was appreciated for teaching young girls to crochet and needlecraft. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husbands, Joseph Maynard Sargent (1956) and John Neil Sim (2013); six brothers, Carlyle, Jim, Bob, and Ray Ring, Elmer and Delmer Goff; two sisters, Joyce Kiser and Pauline Addington. Dorothy is survived by her son Gary Sargent and his wife Ruth of Stafford, VA; four grandchildren, Andrea Brannon (Andy), Melissa Sargent, Darryl Sargent (Traci), Russell Sargent; two great-grandchildren, Patrick Brannon and Callie Sargent; two brothers, Bill Ring and Jessie Ring (Connie); and six sisters, Eva ""Sister"" Jarrett, Kate Holbrook, Erma Ogburn (Allen), Betty Kirby (Ken), Frances Wills, and Debbie Presnell. A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 PM Noon on Monday, July 24, 2017 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 with Rev. Jennings O'Neal officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, 6135 Ridgecrest Point, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 11:45 AM on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made Capitol Caring Hospice, 2900 Telestar Court, Falls Church, Virginia 22042. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Capitol Caring for the care they gave to Dorothy as she declined from dementia in the past year.
