Dorothy Johnston Swartz

Dorothy Johnston Swartz, 77, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, August 7, 2023. She was born in McDowell County, WV on October 4, 1945, to Andrew and Nellie (Gilmore) Johnston. Dorothy's journey in life was marked by love, faith, and an unwavering dedication to her family and church.

Dorothy was a faithful member of Gospel Light Baptist Church for over 46 years, where she trusted Christ as her Saviour and grew in her faith.  She loved singing in the choir and never grew tired of hearing the gospel being preached. Dorothy's devotion to her Lord went beyond attending services, as she took every opportunity in her daily life to witness to others. 

She enjoyed cooking and was a self-taught seamstress, but most of all, Dorothy loved spending time with her grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Swartz; and her brother, Stephen Johnston.

She is survived by her sons, Jeff Swartz (wife, Jacque) and Michael Swartz (wife, Lesa); six grandchildren, Nathan, Grey, River, Leslie, Lorianne, and Levi; one brother, Sonny Johnston; five sisters, Shirley Cardwell, Brenda Thornton, Genevie Estep, Rita Ladd, and Jackie Askey. 

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 11, 2023, at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel with Pastors Jon Shook and Frank Shumate officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
