Dr. Charles Mecimore, a devoted educator, veteran, and beloved family man, passed away peacefully in Winston-Salem, NC. Born in Belmont, North Carolina, on August 20, 1934, Charles was the son of John Edgar and Hattie Bolick Mecimore, both of whom preceded him in death, along with eight siblings.Charles was a lifelong learner and a passionate teacher. He earned his bachelor's degree from Pfeiffer College in 1958, a master's from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1962, and a Ph.D. from The University of Alabama in 1966. His academic career spanned over three decades, including roles as:
· Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama (1966–1967)· Associate Professor at the University of Georgia (1967–1971)· Professor and Department Head at the University of Cincinnati (1971–1980)· Department Head at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1980–1998).
Charles held certifications as a CPA in North Carolina and a Certified Management Accountant. His accolades included being named a University Scholar (1963–1966), a Haskins and Sells Fellow (1962–1964), and recipient of the Breyer Bronze Medal in 1974.A proud veteran, Charles served in the United States Air Force, exemplifying his lifelong commitment to service.He was a faithful member of Calvary Moravian Church and found joy in both scholarship and spirituality.
In 1959, Charles married Barbara Chiddie, and together they built a life filled with love and purpose. He is survived by their three children: Laura Gerhardt (Jeb), C. Douglas Mecimore, Jr. (Robin), and John Amos Mecimore (Jhane).
He was a cherished grandfather to Max Mecimore, Triston Mecimore, Riley Spath (Cameron), Parker Berwaldt (Zach), Emily Gerhardt, and Sarah Gerhardt, and a great-grandfather to three adored great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held, followed by a memorial service to celebrate his life and legacy at 3:30 PM on Sunday October 12, 2025 at Salemtowne Retirement Community.
