Dr. Dennis Derwood Pruett

Dennis Derwood Pruett M.D. - Minister, medical missionary, physician, pilot, and author, went to be with his Lord on November 14, 2014 at the age of 90. He practiced medicine as an Emergency Room Physician at Forsyth Memorial Hospital and at Old Town Immediate Care in Winston Salem, NC. Dr. Pruett retired from medical practice in 2012, and lived in Homestead, Florida at the time of his death.
Dr. Pruett was born in the coal fields of McDowell County, West Virginia. He served in the US Navy Air Corp in World War II aboard the U.S.S. Lexington, and saw combat in the Pacific Theatre. He is the holder of several medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with four stars, and a Purple Heart.
He received a degree in theology from Kentucky Christian University; and received his MD degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine/Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, NC.
Dr. Pruett became a medical missionary and served 25 years in Africa. His ministry and mission work is with the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, and has continued to be actively involved in international medical missions. Dr. Pruett served as president of Hasten International since its founding in 1985. He had previously founded FAME, the Fellowship of Associates of Medical Evangelism, and served as its president for many years.
Funeral services will be held at First Christian Church in Kernersville, NC on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 11:00 .am. Viewing will be on Friday, November 21st from 6-8pm at the church. Dr. Pruett will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
