Dr. Nelson Leroy Shearouse

Dr. Nelson Leroy Shearouse, 85, of Winston-Salem died Monday, June 23, 2014 at his residence. He was born September 6, 1928 in Columbia, SC, the son of the late Floyd Noah and Mary Overcash Shearouse. Dr. Shearouse was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church for over sixty years where he was a member of the choir, a Sunday school teacher and an active council member. He attended Newbery College and graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College where in his later years was a Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of America. He obtained a Master's and Doctorate of Education Degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member of the Sertoma Club of Winston-Salem and serve as a mentor with the Serteens at Carver High School. He was a member of Ardmore Community Club, the Arts Council of Forsyth County and the Retired School Personnel. Dr. Shearouse had an appreciation and love for the symphony and Opera. He also enjoyed traveling the world with his wife. He served as a Principal of Hill Jr. High School, Sherwood Forest Elementary School and Konnoak Elementary School. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Katherine Dixon Shearouse and his brother, Frank Reid Shearouse. Survivors include one daughter, Ann Louise Shearouse Holden of Winston-Salem; one son, Robert N. Shearouse of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, Ryan Dunbar, Will Holden, Ashton Shearouse, and Avery Noah Shearouse; one sister-in-law, Mary Shearouse; two nieces, Jean Shearouse and Sandra Morelli; and one nephew, John Shearouse. The funeral service will be conducted Friday, June 27, 2014 at 11:00AM at Augsburg Lutheran Church with Dr. Rev. Ron A. Rinn and the Rev. Daniel Pugh officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
