Edna Earle McCormick Cheek passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. She was born on December 11, 1939, in McColl, South Carolina to the late Wilburn Earl and Bessie Moore McCormick. She graduated from McColl-Fletcher Memorial High School in 1958. Edna married her high school sweetheart, Marshall Gordon Cheek on August 11, 1961. In addition to being a loving mother, Edna worked as a teacher’s aide for the Richmond County school system, and later for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system, from where she retired in 2009.
Edna was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She enjoyed spending time at her and Marshall’s second home on Oak Island, especially when the family was with them. Edna also enjoyed attending University of South Carolina football games with her family for many years and continued to follow the Gamecocks when she was no longer able to attend in person. Edna was always artistic and creative. Even as a teen, she was a talented seamstress; having made her evening gown when she was crowned Miss McColl High as well as making a wedding gown for her sister, Edith. She excelled in drawing and painting, cross stitching and other crafts. The family has many of her treasured creations to remember her by.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents; and by Marshall, her husband of 62 years. She is survived by her children; son Marc, daughter-in-law Michele of Raleigh, and granddaughter Mallory of Wilmington; daughter Amy, grandson Thomas and granddaughter Emma of Kernersville; sister Edith Lewis of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sister Alice Gatewood, of Chapin, S.C.; sister Beth Stone and niece Jessie Stone of Columbia, SC; nephew Kiah Stone and family of Charleston, S.C., sisters-in-law Edna Stock of McColl, S.C. and Elaine Hudson of Brazoria, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Trellis Supportive Care at 101 Hospice Ln, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 10:00-10:45 AM at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM in the funeral home.
