Edyth Newsom

Mrs. Edyth Sexton Kimball Newsom, 93, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 4, 2018 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, surrounded by loving family members.

Mrs. Newsom was born March 11, 1925 in Forsyth County to Vetra M. Kimball and Coleman L. Kimball. She graduated from James A. Gray High School and retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. An active member of Salem Baptist Church, she attended there for over 75 years. In her free time, Mrs. Newsom loved to go to the beach with family and friends, travel the U.S. and Europe and she visited Hawaii multiple times. She also enjoyed spending time with her many friends. Above all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Newsom was preceded in death by her son, Galen E. Newsom; brother, Coleman L. Kimball, Jr. (Thelma); and sister, Annie Kimball Durham (J.R.)

Mrs. Newsom is survived by her husband of 73 years, John Odell Newsom; her two sons, Kim A. Newsom and wife Cherry, David O. Newsom and wife Janice; former daughter-in-law, Penny Newsom Knight and husband Gary; grandchildren, K. Allan Newsom (Silvana), Amy N. Kennedy (David), Stephanie N. Cole, Matthew D. Newsom (Lydia), John C. Newsom, and Jamie F. Newsom; and great-grandchildren, Laura, Leslie, and Ashley Newsom, Mason Kennedy, Gavin and Ethan Cole, and Emery Newsom.

A celebration of Mrs. Newsom's life will be held Friday, June 8, 2018 at 11 am at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Interment will follow the service at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 7, 2018 from 6:30 - 8 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Newsom to Salem Baptist Church, 429 S. Broad Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
