Kernersville - Eleanor Marie Bodenheimer Atkins, 90, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. Eleanor was born on March 5, 1927 in Forsyth County to Virgil Otis and Edith Reid Bodenheimer. She was a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church for almost 70 years, where she was an active member of the Walker Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. Eleanor was an avid reader, mastered daily crossword puzzles, enjoyed good music, especially operas, and was a member of her Bridge Club for 50 years. She shared her love for learning with her family and began a college education at age 47 at Winston-Salem State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Eleanor took up golf after retirement and loved to travel. She had a sensitive and kind spirit that will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Byron Atkins; her daughter-in-law, Susan S. Atkins; and two sisters, Edith ""Tiddles"" Bost and Emily ""Pecky"" Squires.
Surviving are her sons, Hunter Atkins, and Daniel Atkins (Betty); a daughter, Anna Marie Price (Zachary); and three grandchildren, Amanda Marie Atkins, Zachary ""Smytty"" Smythe Price, and Gabriel ""Gabe"" Lutz Price.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Cash officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church Fellowship Hall.
