Elias Pegram, Jr.

Winston-Salem, NC- Elias "Butch" H. Pegram, Jr., age 70, passed into God's loving care on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.

Born on February 1, 1948 to the late E. Herbert Pegram, Sr. and Lucille Robertson Pegram, Butch was raised in the Southside of Winston-Salem and a proud member of the first graduating class of Parkland High School. He worked in the financial service industry for more than thirty years. After completing service in the United States Air Force, he earned an undergraduate degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a graduate degree in Adult Education from East Carolina University. Prior to entering the financial services field, Butch worked at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and at Cape Fear Technical and Community College. While living in Wilmington, he was very active politically and was involved in numerous organizations. Butch was a member of the Board of Directors for the Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America and a board member of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM). Butch was also an avid supporter of various athletic programs at Wake Forest University.

Butch will be remembered for his outstanding character, dedication and friendships; however, his greatest passion was helping others. In many ways, Butch was larger than life. He was an amazing "connector" of people and ideas and amassed a wide and diverse group of special friends. Butch loved God and he loved people. He enjoyed gathering people together for lively discussion and debate of current events, Wake Forest sports, politics and business. He would often recall and vividly discuss Demon Deacon heroics from years ago. He supported and gave generously to many people and charities that benefited Winston-Salem and surrounding areas. He was smart and fun. His unique qualities and personality will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by his brother, Philip Gray Pegram. Surviving are cousins Joanie Turner, Patsy Cuthbertson, and Jimmy Robertson; niece Jennifer Pegram and great nephew Grayson Pegram; devoted friends "Ike" Keener, Sharon Giddens, Brad Pitts, Ira Williams, Jr., and Jim Creamer; as well as many other dear friends.

A private graveside service will be conducted August 18, 2018. Plans are being finalized for a Celebration of Life gathering to be held soon. In lieu of flowers, friends request that memorials be directed to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission.
