Elizabeth Jean Gillespie

Elizabeth Jean Gillespie, 89, died September 17, 2016 at her home in Winston-Salem, NC. She was born August 8, 1927 in Cranford, NJ to Harry and Helen Connolly Schirmer. She was trained as a nurse at Jersey City Medical Center before marrying and caring for her family. She returned to the medical field as a nurse assistant for many years in the nursery at Forsyth Medical Center before retiring. She especially enjoyed travel, reading, crossword puzzles, and old movies. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her five sisters and two brothers, and grandson Sean Gillespie. Surviving are her beloved husband of 68 years, John J Gillespie, her children, Thomas Gillespie, Patricia (Larry) Sarvis, Susan (Michael) Tuttle, Paul (Jenelle) Gillespie, Gregory Gillespie, Teresa (Myron) James, Catherine (Tim) Atkins, Andrew Gillespie, and Fredrick Gillespie, grandchildren Michelle (Tim) Goelzer, Bradley (Krissy) Tuttle, Benjamin James, Deidre James, Nicole Gillespie, Allison Atkins, and Brandon Atkins, and great-grandchildren Rachel Goelzer, and Landon Goelzer. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 21, 2016 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, one hour prior to the service. The family wishes to extend their special thanks to Denesha Moore of Senior Services for her care over the past years and their gratitude to the care team of Hospice for their assistance in this difficult time. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Senior Services, Inc. or to Hospice.
