Elizabeth M. Horton, 85, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away on May 6, 2025, at Homestead Hills in Winston-Salem. She was born September 19, 1939, in Salisbury, NC to Robert B. Miller Jr and Julia Catherine Miller. She graduated from Boyden High School and completed her BA in Physical Education at Catawba College and earned a master's degree in education from Gardner-Webb University.
Elizabeth taught Physical Education and Health and coached intramural sports in the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County Schools for 35 years. She was an active member in the Phi Chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority – an International Honorary Organization for Women Educators. She was inducted into the North Carolina Physical Education Association Hall of Fame for her unwavering dedication and innovative contributions throughout her career.
Elizabeth was a long-time member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Epiphany where she was a committed Stephen Minister, an inaugural member of the Hand Bell Choir, and an active participant in the Altar Guild. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Old Town Chapter. She was also a Certified Dog Trainer and enjoyed her association with the Forsyth County Kennel Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John A Horton, Jr. and her brother Robert Miller. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Schopfer (Jeffery) of Charlotte; her son, Dr. John A. Horton, III. (Dana) of Upper St Clair, PA; sisters Mary Catherine Taylor of Hickory, NC, and Linda (Larry) Price of Hillsboro, NC; Two grandchildren, John A. Horton, IV of New York City, NY and Evan W. Horton of Pittsburgh, PA and one great-grand daughter, Emerson Uhlig of Severna Park, MD.
The Family will receive friends for visitation prior to the funeral at the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany on Monday, May 12, from 10:00 am until 10:45 am, The funeral service will be held at Epiphany at 11:00 am, with a burial to follow in Forsyth Memorial Park.
The family requests that any memorials be made to the Lutheran Chruch of the Epiphany or the American Heart Association. Condolences can be submitted at www.hayworth-miller.com
