Elizabeth Atkinson Plaisted, 90, known as Betty to her friends, was born Oct. 26, 1924 in Dearborn, MI to the late Joseph Atkinson and Mary McGregor Atkinson. She passed away Oct.17, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center. She graduated from Henry Ford's Greenfield Village Academy in Dearborn, Michigan where Mr. Ford had placed her on her first horse ride. She became a singer and soloist on the weekly Ford Sunday Evening Hour radio program. Her sister, Mary, and she recorded 2 professional albums together. She attended Wayne State University until after the Second World War when she married E. Frank (Bud) Plaisted and moved to Ithaca, NY and began a family while her husband, who returned from the war graduated from Cornell University. Bud's job took them to Philadelphia and eventually to Mt Kisco, in Westchester County, NY, where they raised 3 boys, Jim, David, and Jay. Her love of books was evident as she became an editor for Readers Digest magazine where she worked for 25 years. She had a passion for reading and adored trips to the book store, always surrounding herself with books, her favorite being Pride and Prejudice. She loved all that nearby NYC had to offer as she would frequent the Opera, Musicals and the Symphony. She was active in her church, loved to travel and host gatherings for any reason. She moved to Winston Salem in 1993 to be near her son, Jay, joining St. Timothy's Episcopal Church where she made some very dear friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband E. Frank (Bud) Plaisted, her sister and best friend, Mary Atkinson Dulmage, and her son David Barkley Plaisted. She is survived by her 2 sons, Jim and wife Jane of Mountain Lakes, NJ, Jay and wife Diane of Winston-Salem, NC, her daughter-in-law Lillian of CA, and her brother-in-law Jack Dulmage of AL. She had 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 10:30 am at the Chapel at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Winston Salem, NC by Father Steve Rice. Betty loved to give to charities. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Food for the Poor, 6401 Lyons Rd, Coconut Creek, FL 33073 or your favorite charity.
