Eloise Shelton Howell, age 93, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Eloise was born at home in Lawsonville, North Carolina to Thomas Elmer Shelton and Beulah Mae Sisk. Eloise loved making others feel loved through her cooking. She was an excellent cook and the keeper of the family recipes, (often omitting key ingredients to ensure her recipes were “secret”). In her earlier years, she competitively played basketball. As an avid bowler, she enjoyed participating in bowling tournaments. She also enjoyed painting and making ceramics. She served as an assistant Scout leader to both Boy and Girl Scouts when her children were young. She taught children’s Sunday School, volunteered in the nursery, and in later years served as her Sunday School class’s secretary sending encouraging notes and cards. She spent 30 years as the church secretary at Mineral Springs Baptist Church. She helped visitors feel welcome. She had a lovely singing voice which she shared as an alto in the church choir for almost 30 years.
She is survived by her children, Sharon (Bill) Welsch and Chris (Wendi) Howell; and one grandchild, Melody (Jason) Tucker. Eloise taught her children the value of always being thankful and expressing gratitude. She dearly loved her granddaughter Melody who affectionally called her “Nana” and was always present for every event her granddaughter ever participated in. Both Glenn and Eloise were deeply loved and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew them.
A joint celebration of life service will be held for Glenn and Eloise on Friday, October 16 at 11:00 AM at the Chapel at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home in Lewisville. A graveside service will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: The Lord’s Harvest, 911 Bailey St, Mars Hill, NC 28754, a ministry with whom Glenn and Eloise volunteered for over 10 years.
