Elsie Jones Cude, 93, entered the more immediate presence of our Lord and Savior on Sunday evening, October 9th. Elsie was born in Forsyth County on Labor Day, 1923 to Bertha Miller and Rowan Albert Jones. She often jokingly said that she had been ""laboring ever since"". Growing up on a farm in a family of ten children during the Depression, Elsie deeply understood the value of hard work. She carried this incredible work ethic throughout her life; seeing work that needed to be done, and quietly going about her way getting things accomplished. Elsie was one-half of a set of identical twins, who were so identical, people often called her, ""Twin"", instead of her name. She and her beloved twin, Elma, were two halves of a whole. She graduated from Griffith High School during WWII, and went to work in the war effort at the carbon plant. In 1946, she met the love of her life, Allan Wakefield Cude, and they married on January 4, 1947. Their happy marriage produced two daughters, Marsha Lynn and Susan Alena, born three years apart on December 19th. She was so proud of her daughters, spending her life working to give them every advantage. Elsie went to work at Hanes Hosiery, where she dedicated 49 years of her life. At Hanes, she developed life-long friends with whom she maintained friendships up until her death. In addition to her work, she was dedicated to her family and her church. Elsie was a member of Hopewell Moravian Church from the time she was a teenager, and a part of the chicken pie making crew for many years. She loved to garden, both flowers and vegetables, and was acclaimed for her green thumb. Her baking skills were second to none, especially her pineapple caramel cake. Family canning parties resulted in hundreds of jars of their renowned stuffed peppers, dill and sweet pickles, green beans and beets. Elsie touched so many lives with her loving and generous ways, none any more so than the many animals (squirrels, hummingbirds, dogs, cats, bunnies) she rescued over her lifetime. She will be so missed by her faithful companion dogs, Sugar and Star. In addition to her parents, Elsie was predeceased by her devoted husband, Allan; sisters, Helen Comer and Doris Guy; brothers, Lester Jones and George Jones.
Elsie is survived by her daughters, Marsha Cude Grubbs of Sherrills Ford, NC, and Susan Cude Hutchins (Calvin) of Winston-Salem and her beloved grandson, Ryan Weir, of the home; sisters, Mildred Boyter, Elma Hege (Otis), Ina Rose Seagraves; brothers; Samuel R. Jones (Lola), and Max A. Jones (Carol); sisters-in law, Hilda Jones, Myrtle Radford, Margaret Wooten and Polly Lineback; many nieces and nephews that she loved as her own. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 12 at 3:00 pm at Hopewell Moravian Church with the Reverend Walter Bishop and Reverend David Merritt officiating. There will be a reception in the church Christian Life Center one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hopewell Moravian Church, 701 Hopewell Church Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27127. The family wishes to thank the Novant Forsyth Medical Center 7th Floor Nursing Staff and the Hospice East Team for their loving, gentle care of Elsie in her last days.
