Erika Michelle York Ray, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away after a brief illness, surrounded by the love of family and friends, on April 28, 2026.
Born on November 1, 1967, in Waynesville, North Carolina, Erika lived a life marked by faith, devotion, laughter, loyalty, and a deep love for those she held dear.
A proud graduate of Wake Forest University, Erika carried herself with strength, grace, and a marvelous sense of humor that could brighten any room. She loved reading, music, and cooking, and she was especially passionate about her family, her children, and her grandchildren. Those who knew her will remember her glowing smile, her ferocious friendship, and the way she remained devoted, stubborn, and loyal to a fault.
Erika was preceded in death by her parents, J. Lamar York and Earlene Brown York; and by her beloved grandparents, D.D. and Ethel York, and Clyde and Lola Brown.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 34 years, Julius Wayne Ray; her daughters, Juli Ray Joy, of Portland Oregon, and Jessica Foreman and spouse, Ryan, of Shelby, North Carolina; and her sons, Malcolm Livingston Ray and Marcus Lamar Ray both of Winston-Salem. She is also survived by her brothers, Barry C. York and his wife Tammi of Waynesville, North Carolina and Brandon E. York and his wife Shelli of High Point and their families.
Erika’s most treasured and additional blessings are her seven cherished grandchildren, Talon, Dalilah, Addie Jane, Marlow, Jameson, Lorelai and Kaelynn.
Erika’s life was a gift to all who knew her, and her love will continue to live on in the family she treasured so deeply. Her presence brought warmth, laughter, honesty, and strength, and her legacy will remain in the hearts of those blessed to know her and her faithful example.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, May 8, 2026, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 810 Highland Avenue, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
