Kernersville - Mrs. Estelle Spainhour Pope, 88, passed away Friday, October 2, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born January 18, 1927 to the late Ethel White Spainhour and Oscar Lee Spainhour and raised on a self-sustaining farm in Stokes County, NC. Estelle was the youngest of the family's nine children, and the last survivor. She was a graduate of King High School's class of 1945, and continued attending reunions throughout her life.
In 1950 her beauty and personality attracted the attention of WWII Honorably Discharged Veteran, Cleo Foy Pope, and they lived a very fulfilling life together until his death in 1999.
One of Estelle's greatest passions was being involved in numerous activities at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, where she was a member for 65 years.
When her duties as a housewife became less demanding, she worked with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System for numerous years.
Estelle enjoyed joking around and cutting up, even until her last day on earth. She had a gift for making everyone around her laugh. She enjoyed extensive traveling, gardening, playing cards and games, cooking, sewing, decorating, and family gatherings. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a son, Donnie Lee Pope, and grandson, Tyler Pope Hill.
Surviving are two daughters, Deborah Pope Hill (Jimmy), and Sheila Pope Hicks (Larry), daughter-in-law Barbara Tschopp Pope; four grandchildren, Michael Brian Pope (Sheryl), Joshua Dale Hill, Lauren Hicks Pung (Jordan), and her ""littlest angel"" Lillian Ruth Hicks.
A private graveside service will be held at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, Special Project Fund, 794 Sedge Garden Rd., Kernersville, NC 27284.
