Evelyn Peoples

OAK RIDGE – Evelyn Cook Peoples, 84, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2023 at her home. Evelyn was born on October 14, 1938 in Forsyth County to John and Pauline Cook. She dearly loved all of her family, extending her love for others with her teaching career of over 30 years. Evelyn especially enjoyed teaching 4th grade, as the curriculum included all things North Carolina. She enjoyed reading and working puzzles, but most of all, loved to visit and entertain company at her home, with nobody ever leaving hungry. Evelyn was very involved in her church, Oak Ridge United Methodist, and loved organizing their Brunswick Stew for many years.

In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Peoples; brother, Briggs “Buddy” Cook; and sisters, Sue Cox, and Mary “Bitsy” Mabe.

Surviving are three daughters, Belinda Freeman (Earl), Susan Phillips (Tim), and Laura Peoples; four grandchildren, Laura Frances Freeman Guin (Daniel), Alex Freeman, Christian Phillips Emmons (Justin), and Max Phillips; two great grandchildren, Mack and Marshall Guin; one brother, Johnny Cook; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Oak Ridge United Methodist Church with Pastors Mike Carr, Harrison Hart, and Karen Kurtz officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday night, February 1, in the church Sanctuary.
