Evelyn Durham Welborn

December 17, 2016, Evelyn Durham Welborn, 83, joined her beloved daughter, Scarlett Welborn and many loved ones in her Eternal Heavenly Home. She was surrounded by family, friends and Liberty Hospice, throughout her final days.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, 108 East Kinderton Way, Advance, NC, with Reverend Ronnie Craddock officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm prior to the service.
Evelyn was born November 6, 1933, in Wilkes County to Erastus Jones Durham Sr. & Dossie Wiles Durham. Evelyn was a sweet soul, generous lady, and a wonderful, wife, mother and grandmother. She truly lived the Golden Rule and will be missed more than words can express.
Evelyn spent summers working on the family farm and helping with the care of younger sisters and brothers. She graduated from Roaring River High School in 1953. After graduation, she moved to Winston Salem to work at Hanes Knitting. Evelyn and her husband, Dwight, met on a blind date, arranged by Gordon Mathis, and married in 1954. Evelyn retired in 1994, after a 37 year career at P.Lorillard. They lived in Guilford County until moving to Advance in 1996.
Evelyn was a member of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church, where she had many cherished friends. She and Dwight created special memories traveling extensively, until she was diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer in 2008. Evelyn fought a valiant fight for eight years. She never lost her fun personality and wit; and as long as she was able, never wanted to miss an opportunity to be with friends and family.
In addition to traveling, her interests included family, crafts, cooking, friends, pinochle and shopping. Her favorite trips were to the beach with family, where they had many fun times playing cards, shopping and enjoying beach activities. She never tired of spending time with her family and friends.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her lovely daughter, Scarlett Welborn; great granddaughter, Zeata Jackson; brother, Cody Durham; parents; as well as many loved ones and cherished friends. She leaves behind her husband of 62 years, Dwight Lee Welborn, daughter, Sheila Mays (Charlie); Granddaughter, Ivey Jackson (Corey); great grandson, five month old, James K. Jackson; sisters, Violet Jolley, Nella Blackburn, Darlene Grit, Perdetha Transou, Linda Hawkins, Patsy Ingle (Ron), Mary Ann Durham, Betty Jo Lovell; brothers, EJ Durham Jr. (Patty) and Hayden Durham (Sue); wonderful in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to sincerely thank everyone for their care, visits and expressions of love. Special thanks to Belinda Jones, her hospice nurse; Donna Guidara; Maribel Cruz, Margaret Anderson, Mike Hendrix, and Carolyn Jones.
