Faye Needham

Mrs. Faye Ammons Needham, 90, formerly of Pilot Mountain and Dobson, entered eternal life on October 16, 2018, at her residence in Mt. Airy, NC.  The eldest of five children, she was born in the gorgeous Smoky Mountains to Ralph and Edith Ammons.  After graduating high school, Mrs. Needham moved to Winston-Salem for employment as a secretary at Hanes Dye and Knitting Company.  It was there she met and later married her husband of 55 years, Walter Needham.  She then served most of her remaining working life as secretary of Pilot Mountain Elementary/High Schools and later East Surry High School.  As a farmer’s wife she also spent many laborious days and nights working on their tobacco farm with her husband.  She took great pride and responsibility in rearing their only child Carolyn at the base of beautiful Pilot Mountain.  Mrs. Needham is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Gordon and husband, Ronnie of Dobson; three grandchildren: Kevin (Tammi) Gordon, Tamara (Eddie) Martin, and Kristy (Steven) Nixon; two great-granddaughters, Edi and Eliza Nixon; seven great-grandsons: Matthew, Ryan, and Payton Gordon, Tyler, Aaron, and Bryson Martin, and Abbott Nixon.  She is also survived by one brother, J.R. Ammons of Franklin, NC.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Needham was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Needham; two sisters, Loretta Moore and Anita Bateman Wages; and a brother, Everette Earl Ammons.  A funeral service will be conducted at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel by the Rev. Harry Sammons on Friday, October 19, 2018, at 11 AM.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Dobson United Methodist Church, PO Box 497, Dobson, NC 27017 or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the kind, caring assistance given by Susan Folger, Dolores Shillinglaw, and Cathy Ashburn.  Their help has been invaluable.  Special thanks to Rhonda, Darlene, and Meghan of Mountain Valley Hospice .  (Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel)
