Florence “Mae” King Edwards, 93, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on the morning of Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
Mae was born in Warrenton, NC, on June 23, 1933, to the late William Henry King and Lucy Tucker King.
She attended local schools in Warrenton, NC, before attending King’s College in Raleigh, NC, where she met and married her beloved husband, David Lee Edwards. Their 62 years together took them to Charlotte, NC, Jacksonville, FL, and Winston-Salem, NC, making lifelong friendships everywhere they lived. Mae was employed as a reading coordinator and assistant teacher with Forsyth County Schools for many years, and was a dedicated and active church member who enjoyed singing in the choir.
Mae will be remembered as a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend. Above all, she loved spending time with family and especially sharing delicious food and sweet treats during the holidays.
In addition to her parents, Mae was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, David Lee Edwards; and five of her siblings, William King Jr., Lottie Turner, Harry King, Ernest King and Clyde King.
She is survived by her son, Darryl Wiley Edwards (Lisa) of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Catherine Edwards Lawler (Andy) of Weddington, NC; granddaughters, Melanie Percival (Trent) of Nashville, TN, Shannon Lawler of Somerville, MA, and Caroline Lawler of Weddington, NC; grandson, Christopher Edwards, who is currently stationed overseas; and two great-grandchildren, Lillian Percival and David Percival. She is also survived by two sisters, Linda Abbott and Diane Baggett (Ronnie); and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at Unity Baptist Church, with Pastor Benny Sprouse officiating.
