Frank Doland Queen

Mr. Frank D. Queen, 81, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday afternoon, June 14th, 2017, with his family at his side.

The third child of Russell J. and Nora Norton Queen, Frank was born on February 25th, 1936, in Swannanoa. He grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina and was graduated from Glen Alpine High School in 1954. He then joined the Air Force and served eight years in such diverse locations as Texas, California, Japan, Alaska, and the South Pacific. During this time, he participated in the last above-ground atomic bomb project and also stress-tested and taught the use of prototypical space suits for the Apollo program. Frank was honorably discharged from the service in 1963 with the rank of Staff Sergeant - whereupon he enrolled as Wake Forest College (now University) graduating in 1966 with a BA degree in History.

In the summer of 1968, Frank opened the first Mr. Steak Restaurant in the Southeast. In his 28 years there, Frank as co-owner and manager was known for his outstanding interpersonal and managerial skills thereby establishing lifelong friendships which propelled the reputation and legacy of Mr. Steak. In later years, he successfully expanded his enterprises to include, among others, Susie's Diner in Winston-Salem and Kernersville and the Silver Diner in Mt. Airy, NC.
After his family, Frank was most deeply committed to the sports programs at his alma mater, sponsoring for many years a full athletic scholarship in Football. A long-time member of the Deacon Club, Frank faithfully attended, tirelessly encouraged, and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of every event. Rarely did he miss a game. Never did he falter in his love for his beloved ""Demon Deacs.""

Frank was predeceased by his parents and an infant brother, Douglas. He is survived by his sisters, Joyce Lane and Lou Jaynes; brother Rudy Queen (Pat); twin daughters, Amanda Queen and Melissa Horne; grandsons, Adam and Ryan Bachman; and a devoted special friend, Melta Mebane.

Frank's faith in the Lord was steadfast and true, his aspirations were to continue his spiritual journey in study and practice, and exhibiting generosity, compassion, and love for others.
