Fred Marshall

Mr. Fred Elliott Marshall, Completing a valiant 12-year battle with cancer, Fred Elliott Marshall died peacefully at home in Winston-Salem on October 5th, 2017 at the age of 83. He was born on December 22, 1933 in White Plains, NC, to Blanche and Howard Marshall. Fred grew up in Yadkin County, moving back his senior year to graduate from White Plains High School in 1952. Early on Fred was no stranger to hard work, helping operate the family dairy, priming tobacco, driving a school bus and serving as school janitor. Fred matriculated at NC State College (now University), earning a BS in Industrial Engineering in 1956. In July of that year, he and his wife, Shirley Waugh, moved to Winston-Salem to begin his career with R J Reynolds Tobacco Company. The young couple began their family three years later welcoming their daughter Kimberly; two years later, Kaye was born. Lara joined her sisters a few years later. In 1971, Fred went into business as a partner of FAMCO, Inc., a metal fabricating company specializing in industrial design. He also acquired a number of houses which he maintained as rental properties. He sold his part of FAMCO in 1997 and began buying, selling, and maintaining rental properties. During his retirement years, he married Phyllis Frazier, and they had over a decade together enjoying life and traveling. Fred was known for his devotion to others, and he cherished his many friends, with whom he played bridge and tennis. He always offered a helping hand and was readily available with his truck, a strong arm, or advice on home repairs and landscaping. He was a committed member of the community, chairing the Soap Box Derby Race several years and hosting Vietnamese and Thai exchange visitors to our city. Fred dutifully served as Treasurer and Deacon of Knollwood Baptist Church for several years. He especially enjoyed hosting his annual autumn chicken stew for family, friends and colleagues, complete with outdoor fire for roasting and bales of straw for sitting. In addition to his parents, Fred is predeceased by his older brother, Charles, and by his daughter, Kaye. He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis, his daughters Kimberly (Adam) and Lara (Derek), his brothers Don (Brenda) and Tom (Judy), and his three grandsons, Jacob, Noah and Aaron Zweiback. Very special to Fred are his nephews Anthony and Charles Marshall and Ron Taylor and his nieces, Hilary Marshall and Shay Taylor.
