Mr. Frederick Christian Bauer, 90, died on Friday, May 12, 2017. Fred was born on February 5, 1927, in Palmyra, NJ, to John Albert and Lillian Alberta Bauer. He graduated from Palmyra High School, where he lettered in four sports. A U.S. Army Veteran, he served in World War II, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant and earned the Meritorious Unit Award. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned his B.A. of Education in 1948, and furthered his education, earning his M.A. of Education in 1949. During his time at UNC, he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, lettered in four sports (basketball, football, baseball, and track), and played football in the much-heralded ""Choo Choo"" Justice era. After college, he taught Civics at R.J. Reynolds High School, where he also coached football and baseball. The epitome of a consummate professional salesman, he worked in the transportation industry from 1949-2017. He most recently worked with Kenan Advantage Group in Chapel Hill, NC, where he retired in March after many years of loyal service. He was a big Carolina Tar Heels fan, avid golfer, and member of Forsyth Country Club. He loved attending the Indy 500 and watching the Atlanta Braves. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather; an inspiration and role model to all. Fred was loved by all who knew him and will be dearly missed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Dorothy Jane Bauer; and second wife, Marilyn Straughn. Surviving are one brother, John ""Jack"" Albert Bauer, Jr.; three daughters, Susan E. Bauer, Joan M. Bauer, and Christi B. Shadbolt (Lee); one son, F. Scott Bauer (Elaine); one step-daughter, Allison Hall; step-son, Cliff Straughn; ten grandchildren, John Bradley Cheek, Edward Brent Cheek, Christian Bauer Cheek, Leslie Grant Meadows, Bryan Kent Meadows, Alyssa Faith Shadbolt, Frederick Lee Shadbolt, Brooke Bauer Pugh (David), Stacey Bauer Stephens (Erik), and Matthew Christian Bauer; three great-grandchildren, Vella Reese Meadows, Erik Lee Stephens, Jr., and Sylvia Jane Meadows; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dorothy Bauer Memorial Fund, supporting youth scholarships at Highland Presbyterian Church, 2380 Cloverdale Ave, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the caring and compassionate staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home and the C.J. Fowler nursing team.
