Frederick Weeden, Jr.

Mr. Frederick Daniel “Fred” Weeden, Jr., 94, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on September 29, 1924 to the late Margaret Annie Gray Weeden and Frederick Daniel Weeden Sr. He graduated from Saugus High School in Saugus, Massachusetts.  Fred attended Lowell Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts before being inducted into the U.S. Army on March 1, 1943.  He was selected to be part of the Army Specialized Training Program and assigned to the Citadel in Charleston, SC where he studied for one semester before being transferred to Georgia Tech.  In December 1943, he was reclassified as a Radio Intercept Operator and quickly qualified as a High Speed Radio Operator, becoming proficient with Japanese and German code.  He was assigned to the 62nd Signal Radio Intelligence Company and was stationed in Petaluma, California.  The 2nd Signal Corps, of which the 62nd SRI was a part, was given a Congressional Citation for the part they played in bringing WWII to a successful end.  Fred was honorably discharged from the US Army on March 4, 1946. After his military service, he earned a degree in Accounting and Business Administration from Lynn Burdett College in Lynn, Massachusetts.  He began work at General Electric but spent most of his career at Bell Telephone Laboratories, where he worked as an Electrical Designer.  Fred retired in September 1979.  He became a devoted member of Hickory Ridge United Methodist Church in 1956 and held a variety of church offices over the years. Fred enjoyed playing golf and chess, working in the yard and reading. His favorite pastime, though, was spending time with his family. He attended countless dance recitals, school programs, birthday parties and sporting events. Fred led his family with a quiet strength and unconditional love that will always be remembered. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, John, Margaret, Jeanette, Shirley, and Robert.  He is also predeceased by his first wife, Edith Louise Overton, as well as his beloved son, “Fred” (Frederick Daniel Weeden III). He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Becky Smith Weeden; son, Jim Weeden (Debbie); daughter, Dani Raymer (Neil); daughter-in-law, Clara Weeden; grandchildren, Heather Moore (Kevin), Sarah Rambo (Lee), Dan Weeden (Kelsey), Jake Weeden (Markie), Aaron Raymer, Jordan Raymer, and Charlotte Raymer; and great-granddaughter, Evie Moore.  Fred is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Virginia Parsons; and many nieces and nephews who knew him as “Uncle Buddy”.  He will be greatly missed by all, including his faithful canine companion, Beau. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2018 at Hickory Ridge United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem with Rev. Wesley McLeod officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview memorial Park in Rural Hall. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 this evening, Thursday, December 20, 2018, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall.
