Mr. Garnett James Ayers, 85, passed away November 7, 2016 at his residence. He was born May 3, 1931 in Carroll County, Va. to the late Commodore Dewey Ayers and Francis Thomas Ayers. Garnett was a long time member of New Hope Baptist Church. He retired from Martin Motor Lines with 31 years of service. Being outdoors cutting wood was his favorite past time. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Garnett will be dearly missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby, Ray, and Emmit Ayers; three sisters, Marie Ayers, Josie Martin, Mae Mayes; one grandson, Matthiew W. Fletcher. Surviving is his loving wife of 65 years, Nancy Styers Ayers; three daughters, Sandra Mock of Surf City, N.C, Pam Gortman (Wyatt) of Welcome, N.C, Nannette Fletcher (Michael) of Walkertown, N.C; five grandchildren, Stephanie Goddard (Scott) of Advance, N.C, Josh Martin of Welcome, N.C, Travis Gortman of Hickory, N.C, Nicholas Fletcher of Walkertown, N.C; four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, November 11, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall with Pastor Gary Styers officiating. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall, N.C. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, 718 N. Trade Street, Winston-Salem, N.C, 27101. Online condolences maybe made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
