Garrett Keith Wilson, 54, passed away on January 21, 2026, at Atrium Health Neural ICU in Winston-Salem, NC. He suffered from a brain aneurysm because of a bacterial infection. This was quite a shock after Garrett was feeling great following a successful heart valve replacement this past summer. In keeping with Garrett’s generous spirit, he gave the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.
Garrett was born in Elizabeth City, NC, to Larry and Gay Wilson, but lived most of his life in Winston-Salem. Garrett attended Woodland Baptist and Hargrave Military Academy before graduating from North Davidson High School and Forsyth Technical Community College.
He ran his own business in residential asphalt and commercial parking lot maintenance for over 30 years. He viewed this as a way to support both his family and others by creating jobs and serving the community. His heart’s desire to serve started as a young boy raking up his neighbor’s leaves and continued as an adult, always being ready to help a friend, neighbor, or person in need.
Garrett loved competing. This could be on the soccer field, at the pool table, or even around the game table, playing cards, or some sort of strategy game. He also had a mischievous streak that could be lovably annoying and a smile that would light up the room.
He also loved camping with his dad, uncle, and cousins. As soon as Garrett had kids, he transitioned to being a sports parent or sports coach, as needed, for various soccer, track, shooting teams, and JROTC competitions. He also got them involved with scouting (and eventually Trail Life) so he could share his love of camping and hiking. The family will honor Garrett (and his recently deceased mother) in the Linville Gorge area in the Spring.
Garrett was preceded in death by his father, Larry Wilson, in 2017, and his mother, Gay Wilson, in December 2025.
Garrett leaves behind his wife of 26 years, Sandy; and their two sons, Landon (Katie) Wilson of Winston-Salem and Logan Wilson of Pfafftown; his sister, Lynette Shaver (fiancé, Dwight Jones) of Germanton; and niece, Lauren Shaver (fiancé, Allen Woodworth) of Mooresville. He is also survived by a host of extended family, including beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and brother-in-law/sister-in-law.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Center Grove Baptist Church in Clemmons, NC. The funeral service will be officiated by Pastor Steve Corts, and the family internment service will be officiated by Jeff Chetwood. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Life Share Carolinas (www.lifesharecarolinas.org).
Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is respectfully serving the family.
