Gary Brent Hedrick, born March 20, 1946, in Lexington, North Carolina, passed away leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship, dedication, and deep love for his family, friends and the natural world.
Gary was a skilled builder who, alongside his family, helped shape communities by constructing homes throughout the Sedge Garden area, Lake Norman, and Kernersville. He took immense pride in his work, living by the principle "measure twice, cut once." A true perfectionist, Gary was not only a master carpenter but also a patient and determined teacher, always willing to share his knowledge and skills.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Gary is survived by his wife, Sandra Hedrick; his daughters, Noelle Hembree and her husband Mark Hembree, and Heather Hedrick; his granddaughter, Rachel Kostura and her husband Joe Kostura; and his great-grandson, Finn Kostura. He is also survived by his sister, Dawn Robertson and her husband Mike Robertson; nieces Angie Smith, Christy Romeo, and Tammy Britt; and his nephew, Scott Hedrick. Sister-in-law Judy Hedrick. Also survived by his great nieces Caleigh LaPoint, Sophie Romeo, Madison Britt and great nephews Nicholas Romeo and Hunter Britt.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Maxine Black Hedrick and Eugene Hedrick; his brother, Ronnie Hedrick; and his brother James Hedrick.
A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Gary was a member of the Piedmont Sportsman Club for over 60 years. He found joy in nature, from growing remarkable tomato plants to calling and identifying birds by sound. His home, nestled in the woods, became a personal wildlife refuge-his favorite place to be.
Gary also shared his life with many beloved furry companions over the years, each one cherished. Whether building furniture, crafting homes, or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of nature, he approached everything with care, precision, and heart.
His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on through the many lives he touched, and the moments shared with family and friends. Gary often spoke of "getting back to the good stuff." It brings comfort to imagine him now on a new adventure, heading toward just that.
A visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel.
