Gary Clyde Lewis

Gary Clyde Lewis, 87, of Ronda, NC, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2024, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, NC. He was born to the late Ruth Swaim on October 14, 1936, in Wilkes County, NC.

Gary owned a landscaping business for many years and after retirement he continued to enjoy mowing his lawn. He enjoyed camping with his children and was a loving and dedicated father. As an adult, he was a member of the Winston-Salem Sail & Power Squadron. He enjoyed sailing as well as biking and hiking. Through the years, he was generous and always willing to lend a helping hand.

In addition to his mother, Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Ila Marie St. John Lewis; step-father, Glenn Swaim; second wife, Shirley Pettijohn Lewis; and third wife, Mary Anne Porter Lewis.

He is survived by his daughter, Sherry Strayhorn (Roy); son, Terry Lewis (Pam); grandchildren, Peter Lewis (Christie), Tyler Strayhorn (Hannah), Shannon Strayhorn, and Caleb Lewis; great-grandson, Isaac Strayhorn; loving companion, Shirley Kennedy; and his beloved dog, Jake.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. James Safrit and Rev. Ed Denton officiating. Burial will follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 3982 Clingman Road in Ronda, NC, in honor of Gary.
