Ms Gaynell Hayes, 86 passed away at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on August 14, 2013. Ms Hayes was born on November 4, 1926 to the late George W. and Marie T. Hayes and lived her entire life in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Clyde D. and George W., and one sister, Nola J. Gaynell is survived by her nieces and nephews, caregiver and companion Ann Forehand, and many special friends. She will be deeply missed by her 3 canine companions Mop, Sunny, and Marley. Ms Hayes was a graduate of Gray High School, High Point University, and did her graduate work at UNCG. She taught and coached in the local school system for 31 years. After taking an early retirement due to health problems, she became affiliated with the H & R Block tax service and continued in that profession for 23 years. As an athlete, Ms Hayes was a member of the Hanes Hosiery Softball team which dominated North Carolina and Southeastern Regional Tournaments for many years. The Hanes team played in the Nationals in Los Angeles, California, Toronto, Canada and Clearwater, Florida. Ms Hayes was inducted into the NC Softball Hall of Fame in 1986. Following her retirement from softball, she became an avid golfer becoming a member of Hillcrest and Oak Hollow ladies golf association and for 30 years was a member of the Old North State Golf Association. Gaynell played her first State tournament in 1968 and her last in 1999. Ms Gaynell Hayes was a long time member of Northwest Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Northwest Baptist Church with Rev. Ellen Strickland officiating. Burial will follow the service at Forsyth Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 6-8 PM Friday August 16, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family would like to thank the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for their excellent care- especially Donna Wilson and Megan McSwain. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Kate B.
