George Henry Benton

George Henry Benton, age 94, transitioned at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital on Friday, February 5, 2016. Born October 18, 1921 in Oakland Florida, to William Henry and Emma Sanders Benton. He was educated in the Florida school system. He served in the US Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Sargent First in the Class and a member of the Fire Fighter Brigade. He was decorated with The WW II Victory, Philippine Liberation, and Good Conduct Medals.
On April 6, 1948 he was joined in marriage to Sarah Frances Boone. They made their home in Brooklyn, New York, where they raised their family. He retired from Transposition and relocated to Winston Salem, where he continued to work until his late eighties.
George was a member and deacon of First Church of God in Christ. He will be especially remembered for his devotion to his family and his strong quiet demeanor. He loved music, spending time at home with family, reading the daily paper, fishing, gardening, cooking and coffee.....and he never crossed the bridge before he got to it.
He was preceded in death by two of his sons, George Siplin & Terry Benton, his siblings, Williemae Carter, Bernice Ballard, Beatrice Williams, Elijah Benton, and Arthur Benton. He is survived by his wife, of 68 years, Sarah Frances, and their 10 children Toni & Glenn Fennell, Timothy & Linda Benton, Teraine, Butler, Tyrone & Connie Benton ,Todd & Shawn Benton, Tammy, Tonja, Tabitha, Tryphena Benton,Troy & Dana, Benton, his sister, Ruby Lee, two brothers-in-law Curtis Peyton and James Boone and two sisters-in-law, Ernestine Wood and Arlie Boone, twenty two grandchildren, 3 great grands and a host of nieces, nephews, and loved ones. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am, Monday, February 15, 2016 at First Church of God in Christ with Elder Bernie Cundiff, Pastor officiating. Interment will be at 9:00am, Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Salisbury National Cemetery with military honors.
