George Matthew Brinsmaid of Winston-Salem died Thursday June 1 at his home with family members at his bedside after several years of declining health. Mr. Brinsmaid was born in Lyndonville, N.Y. to Clyde S. and Bertha Hare Brinsmaid. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by two sisters, Doris S. Brinsmaid, Helen R. Brinsmaid, and a brother, Robert C. Brinsmaid. Mr. Brinsmaid attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. and graduated from Ryder University in Trenton, N.J. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed on Okinawa Island in the Pacific when telegrams announcing the Japanese surrender and the end of the war arrived. Mr. Brinsmaid was employed in Washington, D.C. when he accepted an offer to join Western Electric as a Technical Illustrator and moved to Winston-Salem with his wife, Billie Jo. His son Matthew was born in Winston-Salem in December l957. George retired from Western Electric in 1981. After retirement, he was a faithful volunteer for Samaritan Soup Kitchen on Thursdays for many years. He also enjoyed his wood carving hobby creating wonderful birds, ducks, and more for family and friends. Last, but not least, he enjoyed playing golf and walking around the par-course and in his neighborhood into his mid-nineties. George is survived by his wife of over sixty years, Billie Jo; son, Matthew, and his wife, Laura, two grandsons, Jack and Joey, all of Marietta, GA; sister-in-law Jean Brinsmaid, niece Pamela B. Kelly and nephew Craig Brinsmaid, all of Cincinnati, OH; sister-in-law Mary Ann Danese, niece and husband, Leslie and Gordon Kammire, all of Lexington, N.C.; nephew and wife, Daniel and Ginger Danese, of Denver, N.C.; niece and husband Lori and Dan Perot of Cornelius, N. C.; and 12 great nieces and nephews. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, PO Box 130, Clemmons, N.C. 27012, or Hospice & Palliative Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.
