George 'Porter' Houston

George ""Porter"" Houston, 85, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Friday, September 28, 2012. He was born to Ella Mae Kidd Houston and Henry Hopkins Houston. He was a longtime member of Konnoak Hills United Methodist Church and was retired from Lucent Technologies after 30 years of service. Surviving is his wife Betty, the love of his life for 65 wonderful years; a son, Chuck and wife Dawn of King and a son, Terry and wife Lisa of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Lindsey White (Bobby) of King, Major Jeffrey Houston of Beaufort, SC, and Shannon Carr (Jason) of Pfafftown, as well as his great-granddaughters, Haley, Karley, and Maddie White and his great-grandsons, Jared and Aidan Carr. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Terry ""Michael"" Houston on October 2, 2002, as well as his brothers, Humes, Johnny, and Hop Houston. He served in the United States Army as a Sergeant. Porter was a longtime member of the Konnoak Hills Lions Club. He had a passion for the game of golf as well as coaching little league baseball, Pop Warner football, and junior golf tournaments with the UTC. Porter was a kind hearted, loving man who will truly be missed by his family and friends. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00pm, Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Konnoak Hills United Methodist Church with Dr. Robert Wiseman officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends after the burial in the Family Life Center at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Konnoak Hills United Methodist Church, 430 Weisner St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127. Porter's family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for the support and care they gave to Porter and his family and would like to thank everyone for all of your thoughts and prayers. ""Grandpa"", We love you.
