George Edwin Meeks, 92, passed away on March 21, 2026, at his home in Pfafftown, NC.
George was born on July 21, 1933, in Winston-Salem, NC, to the late Crawford Russell and Grace Shepherd Meeks. He grew up in Winston-Salem, NC, with his siblings, Crawford Russell Meeks, Jr, and Mary Bradley Grubbs, and graduated from Hanes High School in 1951.
In 1952, joined the United States Navy with four friends. After completing boot camp in San Diego, CA, he was assigned to LST-883 in August of 1952. He was called to serve his country in Korea in June of 1953. When the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed on July 27, 1953, George served on a ship transferring approximately 70,000 North Korean prisoners back to North Korea. In December of 1953, he was reassigned to US AFDB-1 in Guam. In September of 1955, he was assigned to USS Enhance MSO 437 in Long Beach, CA. He attained the rank of Engineman 3rd Class in October of 1955. He was discharged in May of 1956, after earning the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal Korea, and a Good Conduct Medal.
George married the love of his life, Joyce Anderson Meeks, on December 12, 1955. He worked as a mechanic with the Rexam Corporation, where he eventually retired.
Joyce and George attended Elm Grove Church for many years. George volunteered at Novant Health in his retirement.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Dustin Meeks and Shannon Meeks. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; sons, Michael Edwin Meeks (Janice) of Forest City, NC, Randall Evan Meeks (Becky) of Winston-Salem, NC, and Barry Wayne Meeks, of Tobaccoville, NC; grandchildren, Crystal Meeks of Forest City, NC, Shane Meeks of Raleigh, NC, Jason Meeks of Vancouver, WA, Courtney Meeks Billings of Kernersville, and Krista Meeks of Winston-Salem; and great-grandchildren, Nevaeh Futrell, Shealynn Billings, Eli Billings, and Brooklyn Meeks.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, officiated by Pastor Keith Nichols. An entombment will immediately follow the service at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
