Gladys Comelia Carter Bowling

Gladys Comelia Carter Bowling, 95, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, December 28, 2023. She was born on May 13, 1928, in McDowell County, WV, to the late Watt Carter and Meedie Boles Carter. Gladys is described as selfless by those who knew her. She would give her life to those in need. A member of Welcome Door Baptist Church, Gladys had a close relationship with the Lord. She was known by her church family as “Maw-Maw” and was a faithful member for over 30 years. When she met her loving husband, Paul, she took on his children as her own, and raised 10 children. She enjoyed going to church, going out to eat, shopping, and spending time at the beach. She had an immense love for every single member of her family. Gladys will be missed by those who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Gladys is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Bowling; four sons; as well as one daughter.

Left to cherish her memory are five daughters, Carol Edwards, Janet Whitlow, Elladean Rowe, Elaine McGee, and Katherine Walker; one son, Vincent Bowling; 24 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; as well as many special extended family members.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at Welcome Door Baptist Church with Pastor Brian Taylor officiating. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service at Gardens of Memory- Walkertown. Any memorials in Gladys’ honor may be made to St. Jude’s children’s hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
