Gloria Jean Meadows McPherson (née Martino) passed away peacefully on Monday, June 4, 2018 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem, NC, at the age of 94, surrounded by loving family members. Gloria was born on January 28, 1924 in Wellsville, OH to Agostina and Frank Martino. She graduated from Texas Christian University with a degree in Speech Pathology. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Gloria was the youngest of five daughters from a large Sicilian family. Her mother sang Italian operas as she cooked family dinners every Sunday. Gloria was quite content making massive meals carefully picked from Sam's Club. At times you could find yourself chatting for a couple of hours and soon notice the entire coconut cake between you and her has vanished. If you were in trouble, you might have been pinched under the table but the majority of the time you were listened to and given hugs that could put the pieces back together. Socialite in her own community, no matter where she lived, she lit up every single room. Her sense of humor and quick wit was no match for even the generations way below her. Her intelligence, natural patience, and love of children led her through her career of speech pathology. There was never lack of love from family and friends and to them. Her intuition was strong, even psychic to a point, as she always knew what life had in the works. Sometimes in her grandkids dreams, many times in her own life. Gloria was a unique human being - a beacon of love, hope, mercy, and grace. That she blessed the lives of family, friends and acquaintances for 94 years serves as unassailable proof that God loves us all, and more than any of us deserve. Yet she was also imbued with a deep sense of humility. She never thought of herself as any more or less human than anyone else; as anything but far from perfect. She would probably have rolled her eyes to read such effusive praise. A few years ago, she said she was ready to leave this life; not because she was unhealthy but because she enjoyed the many years she was blessed with, used them each wisely and she appreciated that as is. She is a woman who lived her life the way it is intended-to the fullest and with immense gratitude. In addition to her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Norman McPherson; sisters, Margaret Bosco, Vera Livolsi, Josephine Cunningham, and Geraldine Webber all of East Liverpool OH; and the father of her children, Thomas Meadows. Gloria is survived by her children Pat Blair (Wynne), Cindy McManus and Randy Meadows along with her seven grandchildren, (Renee, Maryann, Cathy, Sean, Colleen, Krystal, Molly) and seven great-grandchildren (Elise, Lydia, Alex, Freddy, William, Kaydin, Krew). A private family service is scheduled for Friday, June 8, 2018 in Winston-Salem, NC. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home at 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, Forsyth Animal Shelter at 4881 Country Club Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, or St. Leo's Catholic Church at 335 Springdale Ave, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
