Grady Odell Bowen

Mr. Grady Odell Bowen, 85, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away and went to meet our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at the Trinity Elms Assisted Living in Clemmons. Mr. Bowen was born on May 3, 1930 in Forsyth County to the late Solomon Odell and Ila S. Bowen. Mr. Bowen graduated from Old Town High School in 1949 and immediately joined the Navy where he spent most of his active duty touring in the Pacific, where he visited Guam, Marshall Islands, Australia, China, and Hong
Kong. It was in Japan where he met his late wife, Yoshiko Ueda, who passed away in 2007. After five years of active duty, Mr. Bowen attended Gaston Tech Institute and earned his Associate Degree in Electrical Technology and went to work for R. J. Reynolds where he retired after 30 years of service. Mr. Bowen also dedicated most of his adult life to the Defense of our Great Nation as he also retired from the U. S. Navy Reserves after 30 plus years of service. Mr. Bowen had attended True Gospel Community Church in East Bend for many years. Mr. Bowen is survived by his daughter, Susan Marlene Bowen of the home; his son, Gary Alan Bowen (Sherry Knight Bowen) of Winston-Salem. A granddaughter, Leslie Bowen David (Matt); three great-granddaughters: Jaela, Haleigh, and Nevaeh all of Florida; a brother, Rupert Bowen (Cynthia) of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Scott Bowen (Caroline) and their son, Bradley of Winston-Salem; an aunt, Olene Booth of Winston-Salem; and an uncle, Dennis Southern of Clemmons. Celebration of Grady's new life will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 9th at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with Pastor Jim Bush officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with military rites provided by American Legion Post 290. The family will receive from friends from 10:00 to 11:30 am prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to: American Legion Post 290, 446 South Main Street, King, NC 27021.
