Mr. Harold Everette Settle passed away on August 29, 2025, at the age of 97. Born in Winston-Salem in 1928, Harold was defined by his love for his family, his pride in his work, his appreciation for the beach, and his joy in sharing a good meal with those he loved.
An extremely intelligent man, Harold found a quiet, steadfast faith in the Moravian Church. He never missed a Christmas love feast and passed that same love to his family. At the age of 18, as World War II ended, Harold enlisted in the Army Air Force and earned a diploma as a radar technician. After being honorably discharged from service, he became a draftsman with Western Electric.
Over the course of his 37-year career, he worked his way from draftsman to mechanical engineering. Upon his retirement in 1989, Harold was tendered a Navy BRAVO ZULU by Ray Witter, Captain of the U.S.Navy for his dedicated service in support of the Navy’s Undersea Surveillance Program.
Harold met the love of his life, Joeann Settle, when he was nearing retirement. After marrying in 1992, they enjoyed many years of travel and adventure. Their romance and devotion to one another were rare and magnificent.
Harold is survived by his wife of 32 years, Joeann Settle; a sister Dorothy Speaks; his brother Richard Settle (Linda); three daughters Rosemary Watts (Tim), Marilyn Doolittle and Julie Wolk (Tom); stepson Jim Martin (Deanna); stepdaughter Teresa Rea (Ben); his grandchildren Josh Little, Jeremy Watts, Sarah Jordan, Lauren Hatfield, Zach Wolk, Noah Wolk, Taylor Sexton, Spencer Alavi, and Sarah Kendrick. Harold was proud to have 10 great grandchildren with another on the way.
He was preceded in passing by his father, Barney Settle; his mother, Geneva Settle; and his sister Norma Kennedy. The family would like to thank the care teams from Harmony at Brookberry Farm and Trellis Supportive Care for their compassionate care during this difficult time.
A graveside service will be held at God’s Acre in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., officiated by The Reverend Chaz Snider of Calvary Moravian Church. There will be no formal visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made either Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or Calvary Moravian Church, 600 Holly Avenue, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
