Harry Heilig

Mr. Harry Heilig born July 28, 1931 died peacefully on September 5, 2018. He is survived by his loving wife Eunice of 66 years; daughter, Lisa Anne Harlow of Harborton, VA; son, Neil of Arlington, TX; grandchildren Erin of Ohio, Michael of Pennsylvania, and Preston, Payton, and Parker of Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Brown Heilig, Sr. and Sadie Stafford Heilig Ritchie.

Harry grew up in Salisbury, NC on a guernsey dairy farm. As a teenager, he won blue ribbons at the state fair for "Best of Breed" and "Best Showmanship" with his calf "Kathy Queen". He went 10 years to Granite Quarry NC Elementary School and two years to Boyden High School in Salisbury, NC. Then he entered NC State College graduating in 1954 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and a commission in the U.S. Air Force. His first Station was on Guam, M.I. as the base telephone officer. He spent the next 29 years in the Air Force Reserve and retired as a Major. The last 10 years of this service was as liaison officer for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. In 1965, Harry was employed as an Engineer by Western Electric, the manufacturing arm of AT&T. His assignments included Winston-Salem, NC; two tours in Burlington, NC; Kansas City, MO; two tours in New York City, NY; San Jose, CA; Boston, MA; Princeton, NJ; and Chicago, IL. He retired in 1984 as the Plant Manager of the Montgomery Works Plant in Illinois. Harry and his beloved wife took many trips overseas and visited all continents except Antarctica. All were memorable but trek's in Nepal (near Mt. Everest), African Safaris in Kenya, Tanzania, and Botswana were breathtaking. Sailing around Cape Horn and visiting Cape Good Hope were magical! Egypt, Greece, and Italy held his interest in history. His last chapter was at Arbor Acres. Reluctant to leave his home on Hertford Road, the home on Francis Asbury Drive in Arbor Acres proved to be exactly the right thing to do. Exercise classes, especially water aerobics with Jamie, neighborhood monthly get togethers, socializing with other residents. Good food, good medical care, and new friends from around the country was a pleasant surprise. The entertainment on campus and off was beyond expectations. The minister, Bert Sanders, is truly one of God's servants- thank you for being an enlightened friend. God Bless all of the residents and god bless Arbor Acres. With all of my love, first of all to my dear sweet wife, second of all to my daughter and Jeff, and to all of you whose paths have crossed mine during my wonderful life!

A celebration of Harry's life will be held Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 2 PM at Piner Hall in Arbor Acres.
