She was born in Floyd County, VA on November 1, 1934, to the late Mr. Benjamin Cordle Phillips and Mrs. Lura Quesenbury Phillips.
Hattie was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church where she served on many committees such as the condolence committee and the missionary committee. She spent countless years ministering to those in the church and often opened her home to missionaries. Hattie served as a directory assistant for Bell South Telephone for many years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers group that raised money to support those with disabilities.
After retirement, she enjoyed doing puzzles, playing word games, especially scrabble, and playing sudoku. She also spent many years traveling to various destinations. Hattie was a true entertainer, she loved to tell her telephone stories that always made those around her laugh, and she found joy in making others happy. She was selfless and had a true servant’s heart, she was always willing to help anyone.
Above all, Hattie loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She loved her church and would always find herself diving deeper into His word. She wanted to teach others about Jesus’ love, so she spent many years teaching Sunday School. Everyone at Salem Baptist Church adored Ms. Wright, but they loved her southern cooking more, she cooked often for her church and for her family.
Hattie was a loving Mama, Grandma, and Great-grandma and she will forever be cherished, loved, and deeply missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in passing by her daughter, Angela “Angie” Wright Foster, who she cared for after a tragic accident for 35 years; and her 6 brothers. Left to cherish her memory are her 3 daughters, Carolyn Sink (Ray), Alice Baker (Billy), and Teresa Wright Horner; a son, Milton Wright (Tammy); 7 grandchildren, Carrie Powers, Shannon Sink, Sharon Mammano, Emily Moody, Margaret Wright; Kayla Perez; and Benjamin Horner; 9 great-grandchildren, Levi, Mason, Amelia, Lily, Alaina, Hattie, Caleb, Miles, and Micah; and a sister, Hazel Phillips.
