Winston-Salem – Hazel Virginia Aaron Byrd, 99, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Piney Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born on October 28, 1919 in Forsyth County to Moyer Garfield and Mary Carden Aaron. Hazel loved people, her antique shop, and she especially loved talking. Hazel made teddy bears for many, many years. She was affectionately known as “The Bear Lady”.

In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by four children, Richard Lee, Mary Lou, Charles, and Tommy; one sister, Velner Smith; and two brothers, Jimmy and Buck Aaron.

She is survived by one son, Donald Ray Byrd (wife, Marcia); one daughter, Ann Byrd; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

A graveside service for Hazel will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Sandy Ridge Cemetery with Pastor Carl Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm prior to the service at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trellis Supportive Care at 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
