Helen Jane McDaniel Shouse

Helen Jane McDaniel Shouse, 87, was welcomed into the immediate presence of our Risen Lord Jesus Christ on December 17, 2016. Her loving husband, Russell, preceded her to eternal glory in 2012.

A service of celebration of Jane's life will be held at Winston-Salem's Home Moravian Church at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 with the Rev. Ginny Tobiassen and the Rev. Lehoma Goode officiating. Burial in God's Acre cremation section will precede the service at 2:15 p.m.

Jane was born in Sampson County, NC on August 14, 1929 to the Rev. James Raymond and Janie Smith McDaniel. Her childhood homes included Buies Creek and Garner, NC where she graduated from Garner High School. In 1950 she graduated from Meredith College. During her time at Meredith she met Russell H. Shouse, Jr., at NC State College student from Winston-Salem. She and Russell were married for 61 years.

Jane is survived by her three children David (Meg) of Cary, NC and their sons Parker and Forrest; Jonathan (René) of Richmond, VA, and their daughters Lisa Shouse Berge (Chris) of Schofield Barracks HI; and Rita Kay Shouse Boreson (Wyant) of Tuscaloosa AL; and daughter Martha Holland of Winston-Salem, and her sons Spencer (Jill) of Greensboro, NC, Barrett, and Alex Holland. She is also survived by 9 great grandchildren: Taylor, Miller, Joy, Virginia, Grant, Anna, and Russell Berge; Lisa Nichole Boreson; and Elliott Holland.

Jane is also survived by her sister, Anna Burnham (Frank) of Orangeburg, SC and her brother William Raphael McDaniel (Lynnette) of Martinsville, VA. She was preceded in death by her brothers J.R. and wife Betty, Reuben and wife Betty Ann, Rogers, and Robert (Jacky). She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and many wonderful cousins.

Jane was a life-long Boy Scout leader and trainer. As a girl she longed to join her older brothers as they went camping, hiking and did all the fun things that Boy Scouts have always done. When she met Russell Shouse, it was a thrill to know he was a Boy Scout leader and had been a Boy Scout since age 12. Jane joined Boy Scouting in 1961 as Den Mother for her sons (both now Eagle Scouts), and she never left Scouting. In addition to her sons, she was very proud of the next generation of her family that includes five more Eagles with more in the wings.

She served locally on the District Committee and Old Hickory Council Executive Board, and on many regional and national BSA teams and committees. She was a staff member for five BSA National Jamborees. She and Russell travelled the East Coast as camp evaluation team members for decades. She served as staff on several Wood Badge Courses and was well known throughout the Southern Region of the BSA. She and Russell took exceptional pleasure in their retirement years serving the Learning For Life affiliate program of Scouting, and they invested over 50 years working as volunteers at Camp Raven Knob.

Jane was honored with the Silver Fawn Award (national), the Silver Antelope Award (national), the Silver Beaver Award (council), and the District Award of Merit. She and Russell were both Vigil Honor members of the Order of the Arrow, Wahissa Lodge, and were fellows in the James E. West Society.

For 40 years Jane was a tour guide and interpreter at the historic village of Old Salem. She loved to share the story of the Moravians. And any boy who she spoke with was always asked ""Are you a Boy Scout?"" During those years she also served as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon and Elder at First Presbyterian church. Russell and Jane joined Home Moravian Church in 2001 and greatly enjoyed being active members. She was also a leader in the West Highlands Garden Club in Winston-Salem and in garden clubs at the state level, and earned blue ribbons every year for over 40 years at the Dixie Classic Fair.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Jane's memory and honor may be made to: Home Moravian Church, 529 S.
