Henrietta Green

Henrietta Stout Green, the wife of the late Rev. W. Norwood Green, Sr. was promoted into the higher service of her Lord at 9:11 p.m., Monday, September 10, three hours short of her 95th birthday. Henrietta was the first of six children born to Edgar Lee and Lucille Henderson Stout, and loved her younger sisters and brothers as if they belonged to her. A child of the Great Depression, Henrietta selflessly served others, and never complained of anything, except perhaps, her husband’s perpetual tardiness at mealtimes. Henrietta was a member of the Moravian Church from childhood, and she was a Graduate of James A. Gray High School, where she was valedictorian of her class. Following her graduation from high school, Henrietta worked briefly at Montgomery-Ward, and then at the old Downtown Garage. On December 26, 1946 Henrietta married Norwood Green, a soldier home from the War in Europe. Norwood was ordained to the Ministry of the Moravian Church in 1951, and for most of her marriage Henrietta served as his “home” secretary. Henrietta was a skilled typist, and she wrote in perfect Palmer Method. Her record of her husband’s ministerial service is remarkable. Henrietta and Norwood had one son, Worth Norwood Green, Jr., born July 21st, 1949, and one daughter-in-love, Elayne Durham Green.  Worth insists that Henrietta was the best mother a boy or man could wish, and Elayne loved and served Henrietta like the daughter she never had. Unlike her husband, Norwood, who never met a stranger, Henrietta was quiet and retiring.  In her latter years, she was almost a recluse, seldom venturing outside her home except to buy groceries or attend church.  Even so, she remained as kind and generous to others, especially those who were close to her, as she was stern and stingy with herself.  Her life was one of constant prayer.  Her character and her faith continue to inspire her family and her friends.  In addition to her parents, Henrietta was preceded in death by her husband, Norwood, by two brothers, Boyd Lindsay Stout and Archie Ray Stout, by a sister, Ella Mae Stout Clifton, by three brothers- in-Law, Bill Clifton, Bill O. Smith and Weldon Wright, by a sister-in-law, Dede Stout, and two beloved nephews, Keith Smith and Greg Garcia. Henrietta is survived by one son, Worth Norwood Green, Jr., and wife Elayne of Winston-Salem; by two grandchildren, Jonathan Worth Green, and wife Lindsay of Newburyport, Mass.; and Edyth Anne Green Berry, and husband Jason, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; by four great-grandchildren, Madison Averette Green, Worth Harrison Green, Caroline Louise Green, and Silas Richard Berry; by two sisters, Lee Smith and Anoree Stout; by two sisters-in-law, by a number of beloved nieces and nephews; and by a hosts of

friends.  Worth and Elayne wish to thank Henrietta’s sister, Lee Smith who watched faithfully over her older sister until the day of her death, and the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, who were all remarkable for their kindness and professionalism. Following a private family interment at Friedberg Moravian Church, a memorial service will be led by the Rev. Scott Venerable at Fairview Moravian Church at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 21st.  The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fairview Church or to the Sunnyside Ministry of the Moravian Church. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
