Henry Vaughn Spainhour

Henry Vaughn Spainhour, 87, of Winston-Salem died Friday, June 2, 2017, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born on May 7, 1930, in Rural Hall, North Carolina to Thomas Hobart and Martha Vaughn Spainhour. He attended RJ Reynolds High School and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, where he attended the Officer Candidate School and was honorably discharged with the rank of Second Lieutenant. He was an engineer with Bell Labs and Western Electric in Winston-Salem. Mr. Spainhour was a longtime member of Ardmore United Methodist Church, an active community volunteer and a loyal Tar Heel fan. In 2010, The Washington Crossing Foundation, which grants scholarships to students planning a career in government service, awarded one of its scholarships in Mr. Spainhour's honor. Mr. Spainhour was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 39 years, Marlene Deal Spainhour, four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Lori Deal Shepherd, her husband Gerald, and grandsons Henry Charles Shepherd and George Harrington Shepherd of Ridgewood, New Jersey, and by sisters Mrs. Norma Cox and Mrs. Bonnie Speas and numerous nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held at Ardmore United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM on Monday, June 5, 2017, with visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Rev. Bev Coppley will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Spainhour's memory to Ardmore United Methodist Church or The Henry V.
