Mr. Howard Anderson ""H.A."" Cates, Jr., 76, passed away Monday, October 10, 2016 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on December 25, 1939 in Forsyth Co. the son of the late Howard Anderson Cates, Sr. and Juanita Cranfill Cates. H.A. retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a mechanic. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he took great pride in keeping up the church and cemetery grounds. H.A.'s favorite things included spending time with his family, watching his grandchildren's sporting events, going to races, working on old cars and riding his tractor. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Cates and brother-in-law, Wayne Tuttle. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Betty Key Cates; two sons, Michael Cates (Pearl) and Darrell Cates (Carole); four grandchildren, Andrew Cates, Austin Cates, Darrell Cates, Jr. and Caroline Cates; two sisters, Helen Brewer (Bruce) and Kathy Jessup (Brent); a sister-in-law, Sue Cates and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Macedonia Baptist Church in Tobaccoville with Rev. Marty Sewell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 this evening, Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to: Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 341, Tobaccoville, NC 27050. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of ICCN and Palliative Care at Forsyth Medical Center for the loving care shown to H.A. during his time of need.
