Mr. Hugh Aldean Snow, 93, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 3, 2017.
Hugh was born May 22, 1924 in Surry County to the late Walter Oscar Snow and Alza Mae Smith Snow. He graduated from Copeland High School in Dobson, NC, Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC, and Mercer University in Macon, GA, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was a varsity basketball player at both Mars Hill and Mercer. Hugh later received a Master of Education degree from UNC-Greensboro. Hugh served as a Staff Sargent in the U.S. Army, where he served his country proudly in WWII. After his discharge from the Army, he worked several years as a teacher/coach/guidance counselor in the Forsyth County School System. In 1955, he went to work for Hennis Freight Lines as a training coordinator and finished his career there as Director of Personnel. In 1972, he began working for Unique Furniture Makers and retired in 1989 as Vice President of Human Resources. Hugh served as a member and president of several professional organizations. He received North Carolina's highest civilian award, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, from Governor James G. Martin, in 1989. He was a longtime Mason, serving twice as Past Master of Piedmont Masonic Lodge # 711.
Hugh drew great strength from his faith and worshipped at Centenary United Methodist Church, where he had been a member since 1955. In his retirement, he dabbled in lamp making, pocket knife and antique collecting, and genealogy. Most of all, he was a people person and especially enjoyed visiting with family, friends, and neighbors.
In addition to his parents, Hugh was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellis Snow, and brothers, Wade Snow and Cletus Snow. Hugh is survived by his daughter, Pat Ingle and husband Jack; son, Richard Snow and wife Linda Robinson; grandchildren, David Whitman, Jennifer Roberts and husband Mike, Kevin Snow and wife Michelle, Kathryn West and husband Luke, and Brian Robinson; and great-grandchildren, Chris Whitman, Brandon Whitman, Jensen Whitman, Kate Snow, Roman Roberts, and Carolina West.
A celebration of Hugh's life will be held Monday May 8th at 2:00 pm at Hayworth-Miller Chapel on Silas Creek Parkway, Winston Salem, NC. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
