Hyle Edward Atkins, Sr.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, Hyle Edward Atkins Sr. passed away into eternal peace at Cedar Hills Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Clemmons, North Carolina. Though his body was frail and tired, his spirit was full of strength.

Hyle was born on February 1, 1938, in Glen Fork, WV. Prior to residing in North Carolina, he was a lifelong resident of Mullens, WV. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Charlotte Webb Atkins, his sister, Connie Lafferty, his mother, Ruth Elizabeth Perdue Atkins and his father, Lyndon Hyle Atkins.

Hyle is survived by his children, daughters, Dana Atkins Johnson and her husband Jeff, Alice Atkins Sixbey and her husband, Tom, and his son, Hyle Atkins Jr. He also leaves behind his four grandchildren, Haley Johnson Jenkins and her husband, Christian, Chris, Holland, and Noelle Sixbey. In addition, Hyle leaves behind his beloved sister and brother-in-law, Myrtle and William (Bill) Smith of Charleston, WV.

Hyle, known as Buddy to his friends and PaPaw to his grandchildren, was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and son. He was also a proud veteran of the US Army. He spent his time with his family and his hobbies which included gardening, biking, kayaking, and special skiing and deep-sea fishing trips with Myrtle, Bill and his wife, Charlotte. Buddy was a dedicated coal miner for over 30 years.

In West Virginia, Buddy loved working in the coal mines, and he worked a lot. The coal mines were where he earned the nickname of “Batman” for being down in the mines so much, working “time and a half” and taking on shifts for others. Buddy also worked in the coal mines in Virginia for which he commuted very long hours to his workplace.

Buddy and his wife Charlotte were our family's foundation. They were married 62 years and worked hard all their lives to support their children and any other family that needed them.

Hyle was also a devoted and active church member at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Mullens, West Virginia where he volunteered for many church activities. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton chapel.
