Ilias Nikolaidis, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on November 4th, 2026, surrounded by the love and support of his family.
Born on June 22, 1951, in Vironas, Athens, Greece, to Nikolaos and Andriani Nikolaidis, Ilias lived a life defined by dedication, resilience, and love for those closest to him. He carried great pride in his Greek heritage and the values of family, loyalty, and hard work that guided him throughout his life.
Ilias proudly served in the Merchant Marines and graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy of Chios, Greece. His years at sea reflected his adventurous spirit, strength of character, and commitment to excellence. At 8 years old, he first traveled throughout the Mediterranean Sea with his grandfather, working odd jobs on the ship. He immigrated to the USA in 1984 and was a proud Greek American, grateful for the opportunities this country gave his family. By trade, he was a mechanical engineer who traveled the world building power plants. He spoke three languages fluently and loved living abroad in Mexico and Guatemala, where he exposed his children to the beauty of the Hispanic heritage.
Above all, Ilias was devoted to his family. He was a loving spouse to Maria, a caring father to Andriani, Despina, and Athanasios, whose wisdom, guidance, and unwavering support left a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him.
His greatest joy was being a grandfather. He cherished every moment spent with his beloved grandchildren: Maria-Christina, Aristidis, Elias, Miranda, Hermione, Leonidas, and Ireland. Whether sharing stories, offering advice, or simply enjoying their company, he took immense pride in each of them and celebrated their accomplishments as his own.
Ilias will be remembered not only as a husband, father, and grandfather, but also as a loyal and trusted friend. He was known for his generosity, kindness, integrity, and willingness to help others. His warm presence, sense of humor, and steadfast loyalty earned him the respect and affection of all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nikolaos and Andriani Nikolaidis, and his aunts and uncles.
Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, his legacy lives on through his family, his friendships, and the countless lives he touched. The lessons he taught, the love he shared, and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him forever.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, November 6, 2026, at Panagios Pammakaristos Monastery. Burial will follow in the Monastery Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, you can donate to East Forsyth High School in Kernersville, NC, and put "in memory of Ilias Nikolaidis" in the memo, or to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Winston-Salem.
May his memory be eternal.
