Isaac David Smith III

October 7, 1962 – June 24, 2025

Isaac David Smith III, 62, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025. Born on October 7, 1962, in Charleston, South Carolina, David was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, David—also known as “Smitty”—served his country with dedication and honor until his retirement. He carried the discipline and camaraderie of military life into his civilian years, but it was his humor, warmth, and almost Santa-like kindness that made the biggest impression on everyone who knew him.

David had an infectious love for life’s wonders—he was a lifelong enthusiast of music, often found strumming his guitar. He was fascinated by planes, jets, rockets, and the mysteries of space, spending countless nights stargazing. He loved sailing and fishing, enjoyed bowling, and had a joyful passion for collecting toys.

He often said, “Not a day goes by that I don’t think of my family.” That deep devotion was felt every day by those he loved.

David is survived by his children, Clarice Joy Harris (Ashton Harris), Jonathan Clark Smith (Jean), and Joshua Allen Smith, with the mother of his children, Lea Vitug; and by his cherished grandchildren, Gavin Luke Smith, Alyvia Grace Harris, and Sebastian James Smith. He is also survived by his siblings, Elizabeth Ann Smith-Warfel (Michael Warfel) and Michael W. Smith (Alice), and his niece and nephew, Harper R. Griggs (Josh Griggs and their children Colton and Rieley) and Jacob Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac David Smith Jr. and Wealthy Ann Clark Smith.

His family and friends will remember him for his generous spirit, his humor, and the love he radiated.

Details regarding a memorial service will be shared with family and friends privately. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in David’s memory to a veterans’ organization or a charity of your choice.
